Whether you’re moving into a new place, rearranging a room, or need to clear out a room for workers to be able to complete a job, it’s important to ensure that your carpet is protected. It’s easy for people to accidentally stain or damage their carpet while moving furniture. Fortunately, there are ways you can protect your carpet during the process.
#1. Disassemble The Furniture
If possible, take your furniture apart before you try to move it. For instance, if you want to move a dresser, you can take the drawers out and move the dresser and the drawers separately. Many furniture pieces can be taken apart and put back together, which is easier on your back and your carpet.
#2. Avoid Dragging Or Sliding Furniture
Unfortunately, you can’t take all the furniture pieces apart. When you’re trying to move your couch, it may seem like a simpler solution to drag or push it across the floor. However, if you want to protect your carpet, you want to lift furniture whenever possible.
This is because dragging or sliding furniture can end up damaging your carpet. Sharp edges can snag on the carpet, causing it to look like it has a run.
There is a caveat to this, though. If you don’t utilize proper lifting techniques, you could end up hurting yourself when trying to lift your furniture. If it’s just you trying to move furniture, it may be worth it to hire someone to help you. There are cases when contractors will help you move furniture away from the area they need to work in, but this shouldn’t be expected.
#3. Use Furniture Sliders
These are round, coaster-like pads that you can put on the bottom of your furniture to help protect your carpet. These have two-fold benefits: they prevent your furniture from denting your carpet and they make it easier to slide your furniture if you cannot lift it, with decreased risk of carpet damage.
#4. Use Old Mats And Rugs
Placing these on both sides of the doorway can prevent dirt and debris from being tracked into the house if you are moving furniture in and out of your home. You can also set these down in walkways and over carpets where furniture isn’t going to be set down. This helps to prevent issues like carpet stains on moving day.
#5. Use Carpet Masking
Carpet masking is similar to stretch film. It’s a self-adhesive, non-slip material that lets people walk over your carpet and move things around while keeping it protected against stains and dirt. It is typically resistant to tears and punctures, which can protect your carpet from potential snags and the like, as well.
#6. Use Plywood
This is a more expensive option than carpet masking or using old rugs and the like. However, plywood is an excellent way to protect your carpet while moving furniture into a new home or out of an old one.
This is because it essentially functions as a secondary floor on top of your existing floor. When you use plywood, you don’t have to worry as much about scratches, scrapes, or dents, because these damages are happening to the plywood, not your carpet. Once everything is in its proper place, you can remove the plywood and enjoy your non-damaged floors.
#7. Consider Shoe Covers
This is one of those options where it depends on why you’re moving furniture. While shoe covers can prevent dirt from your shoes from getting on your carpet, if you are moving furniture in and out of the house, they’ll just get dirty outside. People would need to take them on and off again at the door, which isn’t possible a lot of the time when lifting heavy furniture.
However, if you are just moving furniture around your home, then these can help prevent dirt and debris from building up on your carpet.
#8. Have A Carpet Cleaner And Rag On Hand
Accidents can happen. It’s best to see to any spills right away, before they have the chance to set into your carpet and become difficult to remove stains.
If you are working with movers, they should have a mind to protect your floors. Unfortunately, this isn’t always the case. If you notice any damage to your carpet that wasn’t there before, you can take pictures in the event you need to file a claim with the moving company. If your carpet gets dirty, it’s important to have it cleaned as soon as possible.
